Est. 2012 — Handcrafted in small batches

Grainwell began with a single question: why does everything fall apart? Not from overuse — from indifference. From factories optimized for throughput, not longevity. From hides split too thin. From threads chosen for cost, not strength.

"We make things slowly, on purpose. A wallet that lasts twenty years is not a luxury — it is the most sensible thing you can own."

— James Grainwell, Founder

Every Grainwell piece starts with full-grain leather — the top layer of the hide, the strongest and most character-rich. We source from tanneries we've visited. We stitch by hand using linen thread. We finish edges by burnishing, not painting. These are not marketing claims. They are just the way things ought to be made.

How we work

Four principles.
No compromises.

These are not marketing points. They are production constraints we chose and refuse to relax.

Full-grain or nothing.

We use only the top layer of the hide — full-grain leather. It is more expensive, harder to work with, and more beautiful. It develops a patina that tells your story, not ours.

Every stitch by hand.

Saddle-stitching with waxed linen thread is slower. It is also stronger than any machine stitch — if one hole breaks, the rest hold. That is the point.

Personalized from the start.

Your initials, a date, a short phrase — stamped into the leather before it leaves the bench. Not a sticker. Not an afterthought. Part of the piece from day one.

Built to be repaired.

We design every piece so it can be resoled, re-stitched, or re-conditioned decades from now. We keep spare hardware and matching thread for every product we have ever made.

Makers on the bench

Made by hand

Two makers.
A single workshop.
No shortcuts.

Grainwell is not a brand that commissions leather goods from a factory. It is a workshop — two people, one bench, and a philosophy that good things take time. James and Maya have been working leather together since 2014.

When you order from Grainwell, your piece enters a short queue. We cut, skive, dye, stitch, burnish, and stamp it ourselves. Your name goes into the leather before it dries. No one else will ever have this exact piece.
